Fredericksburg

Friends of the Rappahannock

Having grown up in Fredericksburg all of my life, Friends of the Rappahannock is something that I am excited to be able to include in my final project. As important as it is to make sure I cover all of the big picture topics, I really wanted to include what is happening locally. Hopefully this local link will encourage UMW student to go out and get involved if they aren't already.

This organization does many things in effort to keep our local waters clean. Advocacy is a big part of what they do. They review and comment on local ordinances, general development plans, and permits. They actively attend the Virginia General Assembly to make sure there is continued funding for clean waterways and work with many other organizations to maintain other strong programs of this nature.

They also have rivers clean up events and post those on their website. Along with the rive clean up, they also work with restoration of the land around the waterway as well. They work to restore shore lines and strengthen them. They have just started a new oyster program and they also restore streams.

If you would like to learn more about the organization and look into helping with future cleanups, their website is linked above.
